College Branded Clothing

October 20th, 2008 by Administrator

Ted is a devout OU Sooners fan. Even when he was still in high school he purchased all the college branded OU clothing he could find. Now, he is a freshman at OU and the first home football game is tonight and he must decide what he is going to wear that will work for the game and for the party after the game. He can’t come back to the dorm after the game to change and he wants to look his best for two reasons. After the game, he is taking Shelia to the after football game party. He heads to his closet.

In his closet, he has the University of Oklahoma college hooded sweatshirt in dark ash and one in cardinal, which would be perfect because the weather will be on the chilly side this evening, but that won’t work for the party afterwards. Other items he has that will keep him warm during the game include the University of Oklahoma college sweatshirt in dark ash, the Oklahoma Sooners signature college sweatshirt in dark ash, the University of Oklahoma college hooded sweatshirt in charcoal, University of Oklahoma college crew sweatshirt in dark ash, charcoal and cardinal, the University of Oklahoma college mock neck shirt in white or cardinal, the University of Oklahoma college twill shirt in cardinal and the University of Oklahoma college long sleeve denim shirt. Any of these would work perfectly for the game, but for an indoor party he may be uncomfortable. He could mix and match and wear something that could be removed and left in the car while he attends the party.

While he is making his decision, across the campus in the girl’s dorm, Shelia is going through the same dilemma. She is also trying to decide what she should wear to the big OU game and the party afterwards. She also has all the OU College branded clothing you could think of for women. In her closet she is deciding between the University of Oklahoma ladies college hooded sweatshirt in charcoal, the University of Oklahoma ladies zip college hooded jersey shirt in charcoal, the University of Oklahoma ladies college hooded sweatshirt in charcoal, University of Oklahoma junior college long sleeve t-shirt in white, and the University of Oklahoma junior college string top shirt.

They both must decide what to wear to show their school spirit, look great, and be comfortable during the game and the party. What do you think they both choose?

Ted leaves his dorm wearing the University of Oklahoma college mock neck shirt in white with the University of Oklahoma college long sleeve denim shirt over the mock shirt neatly tucked into his jeans. And to keep him warm he decides to wear the University of Oklahoma college hooded sweatshirt in cardinal. Now, after the game he can leave the hooded sweatshirt in his car and enjoy the party.

Shelia leaves her dorm wearing the University of Oklahoma junior college string top shirt over this comfortable shirt she decides to wear the University of Oklahoma junior college long sleeve t-shirt. And of course she will wear the University of Oklahoma ladies zip college hooded jersey shirt in charcoal.

They are both off to enjoy the game, warm comfortable and stylish in their college clothing displaying their pride for OU. GO OU!!

Climbing a mountain of ice in nine weeks

October 19th, 2008 by Administrator

Climbing a Mountain of Ice in Nine weeks

Have you aver seen the documentaries of mountaineers and ice climbers well that’s me! I have climbed some of the biggest mountains around the world and climbed some of the steepest ice of frozen water falls and glaciers.

Why do I do it?

Well, I get asked this all question the time and I always give the same, reply “because it is there”
This however my not be the real truth, it is something about the challenge and being away from the crowds, being on the front of a 300 meter cliff with only a pair of crampons and ice axes between you and the ground, putting all your skills and strengths as an ice climber against the odds.
It makes me feel alive, and to be honest when I am ice climbing, I am me! Me Ashley Barnard the ice climber, free from the rest of the world, nothing hidden, not pretending to be a better or worse person but just pure human spirit.

Ice Climbing is not for the fait hearted, it takes practice and courage to climb this fragile substance. After all it is only water.
If you fancy taking up the sport but do not know where to start then keep reading.

The best way to start ice climbing is to go out into the hills with an experienced climber or hill walker, and start walking the hills in winter, the whole process can be done in one season so I shall break it down into sections for you.

Buy your self a pair of crampons and a pair of ice axes; these can be bought at any good outdoor retailer. But before going out to buy just any old gear, remember that these are the tools of the ice climber and they are the only items that will be holding you to the ice so if you can not afford to buy the best then wait and save your money until you can, you will be great full of this later on.

Right let’s start:

Week 1-2: Walk the hills with your crampons and hard snow this will give you feel for them and how to walk with spikes on your feet. (Believe me the first time you do this you do not want to be wearing an expansive pair of pants)

Week 3-4: Start walking on steeper ground, look for shallow gullies where you will now be needing the use of one axe to keep you balanced, and to stop a fall. (For how to stop your self when sliding down a mountain I shall cover this in part two later on this year)

Week 5-6: go out with your more experienced climbing partner as now you will be needing to use a rope for safety. Look around your hills and mountains for steeper gullies around 45 degrees to 65 degrees and climb this in pitches (stages) stopping when ever you come across a safe place to rest or stand. You should by now also be using ice protection that you have been introduced to by your climbing partner. Unfortunately it is to complex and difficult to explain how to use ice screws, dead men and snow stakes in an article, so ask for assistance regarding placing ice protection form your friend or an instructor.

Week 7-9: you should by now have some confidence in moving on steep ground using both ice axes to progress. So now during these next three weeks you are going turn form a winter hill climber into an ice climber. Go out to where you know there was a stream or small water fall running in the summer, and with any luck it will be now cold enough so as to be frozen into a nice ice climb. Please note do not go out to some massive ice fall that you know of, and try to climb it. Not only will you probably not succeed but you run the risk of killing your self and possibly others by you lack of experience.

So did you enjoy your self? If not then this type of recreation is probably not for you, but if you did then this is the begging of the rest of your life, there is a whole world out there for you to climb just climb safely but most of be free and enjoy your self.

My web site http://www.coldclimbs.co.uk covers many winter Ice Climbs in the UK and if you ever fancied getting out with an experienced ice climber then feel free to drop me an email through my site

Body Types

October 18th, 2008 by Administrator

The human body has three different body types that are known as the Endomorph, Mesomorph & the Ectomorph. So listed below are 3 quick synopsis of these body types so that you will you have a better understanding of body type you might be.

Endomorph

The Endomorph body type is the most prone to body fat when compared to Mesomorph and Ectomorph while at the same time can gain muscle easily.
So keeping this body type in good shape would be the result of moderate exercising and aerobics.

But the health risk of this body type is that it’s more prone to heart disease.

Mesomorph

The Mesomorph body type has a increased rate of building muscle on the body.

Including little to no body fat and a high percentage of muscle mass.

Ectomorph

The Ectomorph body type has a high metabolic rate that leads to the existence of very little muscle mass but the benefits are that this body type can maintain a lean figure.

And since the high metabolic rate works against building muscle mass you can counter act this by doing strength training and taking in more protein.

Boat towables come in all sizes and kids love them.

October 18th, 2008 by Administrator

Boat towables come in all sizes and kids love them. They especially love the one or two or rider type. The two rider type allows them to have their buddy enjoying the exciting ride with them. All they have to do is hang on tight.

The fact that it doesn’t take any experience to have an exilerating ride is even more appreciated by kids of all ages. With their faces so close to the water it seems like they are really speeding even though they are really only going ten miles an hour. Make a note of that – 10 miles an hour. They should have helmets and life jackets on at all times.

The driver should start out slowly, going straight ahead for the little ones. Then gradually begin to turn slightly, first one way and then the other until the child is ok with it. Then these turns from side to side can increase in size until the tube is sliding up the side of the wake the boat is making. You can get a little wilder as the child gains experience and knows what to expect.

Want to have fun with your kids and their friends? Multi-Rider Boat towables are the answer. Companies making multi rider inflatable towables are: SportsStuff, Rave, Hot Dog, O’Brien, Connelly, AirHead, and Body Glove

The names these companies give their towables are descriptive and amusing: Waketower , Gargantua , Hot Dog, Triton, Big Bertha, Rocketeer, Sea Sled, Waterbogan, and Banana Sled

Towing Speeds

The speed needs to be geared to the age of the riders.

Age 5 to 11 – - -8 to 10 MPH

Age 9 to 14 – - -10 to 15 MPH

Age 13 to 16 – - – 13 to 20 MPH

Along with age, ability is an important factor. This means the ability of not only the riders but the driver of the boat and the designated spotter. Everyone involved should be alert and sober, but the ultilmate responsibility for the safety of all the riders and even other boaters is on the driver. Therefore the driver should communicate the possibilities of problems and how to deal with them.

Towing the multi-person Boat towables requires a heavy duty tow line as well as a heavy duty towing harness. Check the instructions that come with your boat towable so that you don’t exceed weight requirements

Backspin Advice

October 16th, 2008 by Administrator

Lately, I have received many requests for 2 things.

1. Advice on how to hit backspin (always a common request)
2. Advice on the short game in general.

So I have decided to focus my next two newsletters on these subjects. Today the focus will be on backspin, and in the next few weeks I’ll get one out on putting and chipping, and then following that will be course management.

Honestly, the first thing that you need to realize about creating backspin is that it’s a very tough shot to accomplish, let alone control.

The second thing that you should realize is that there are very few situations where this shot is actually needed.

In my opinion, the best shot to master is an approach shot that bounces once, and then stops on a dime. This shot is not easy to accomplish either, but is more realistic and much more effective in the vast majority of cases.

So I’ll get in to the basics of this shot now, but please realize that an entire book could be written on this subject, and it would still be very hard to incorporate into a recreational game.

Here are the basic conditions that must be met before the shot even occurs. If these factors are not in place, don’t try to create backspin.

Conditions must be completely dry – (the club face, and the ball included)
You must be on the fairway – (grass can’t get in between the club and the ball)
Green’s have to be very nicely kept – (very short)
Now, let me clarify. Those are the conditions that must be met before the shot even occurs. So hopefully, you are beginning to see just how difficult this shot is and why it doesn’t come highly recommended from someone who focuses on making golf simple.

I was thinking of ways to describe the action necessary to create backspin, and I came to the conclusion that the best analogy is one of placing spin on the cue ball in billiards.

Side Note: They say that good pool players are also good putters. So if you want to sharpen your putting skills, I would advise learning billiards as well. It will help you to develop steady hands, “learn to see the line”, and it will also teach you alot about spin.

In Pool, to create backspin you have to hit downward on the cue ball with a significant amount of force. Notice that players chalk up before hitting a shot requiring a lot of spin (dry). They also go at the ball with a very steep angle. And they hit the lower portion of the ball.

All of this is necessary in golf as well. The ultimate goal is to “pinch” the ball between your club and the fairway. You must take a downward blow at the ball, you must add a fair amount of velocity to your swing speed, and you must make clean contact with the lower portion of the ball. It is all of these factors combined that make this shot so tough to complete with any accuracy.

It’s also essential to have a new ball (preferably a high spin/soft-cover ball), and a newer (clean) club that has some of the grip left on the face. As the ball compresses into the grooves on the face of the club, backspin is created.

On a final note; it’s important to realize that if you make course management the foundation of your game, you will rarely be in a situation where you need to use backspin. Course management is one of the true keys to golf. I’m going to publish a newsletter on it in the next few weeks as well, so be on the lookout.

Are You A One-Dimensional Trainer?

October 15th, 2008 by Administrator

Most people are classically biased toward one of the three legs of the fitness triad: progressive resistance training, cardiovascular training or diet/nutrition. How many folks try and lose weight by dieting and dieting alone? A safe bet would be a majority of individuals. Ever wonder why people who lose a lot of bodyweight rapidly still look fat? It’s because they are still fat.

When the human organism perceives starvation it reverts to a primordial hardwiring that seeks to preserve body fat (the last line of defense against starvation) at all costs. So dieting alone can results in weight loss but when more muscle than body fat is lost as a result of crash dieting, the end result is not all that impressive.

I had a self-indulgent buddy who balloon up from 200 to 350. He eventually went on some sort of weird diet and lost back down to 200. He looked terrible, loose skin, still fat and to make it all worse he was now a ‘diet expert’ and told me and anyone else within earshot how stupid they were to follow any diet other than the one he had used. Of course he still couldn’t catch a ball or walk up a flight of stairs without getting totally gassed.

At the other extreme I knew a really good long distance runner who was thin as a rail, lived on carbs and eschewed lifting or protein. He became anemic and emaciated the combination of mega-miles and carbs and fruit in meager amounts produced a physique that resembled a famine victim. Lifting weights to his way of thinking would add muscle that he would have to haul around and would have the same impact as wearing a backpack with a 10 or 15-pound plate in it. Needless to say by the time he got to his mid-thirties he started experiencing the usual repetitive motion injuries – knee arthroscopic surgery, ankle ligament damage, eternal shin-splints. He eventually had to give up running altogether.

My third example is a former national level powerlifter; a man who set regional records and grew gargantuan. Eventually he weighed 350 and was able to squat over 900-pounds. He ate everything in sight and had to quit lifting altogether when he developed terrible circulatory problems.

Each individual I referenced took one particular leg of the fitness triad and because of overemphasis turned the pursuit of their specialty into something opposite of fitness & health. Better to practice a little of each leg of the triad instead of emphasizing one aspect to the exclusion of the other two. It makes perfect sense when we are presented with extreme and obvious examples.

Are You Addicted to Anger?

October 15th, 2008 by Administrator

Michael was raised in a home where anger was used to control. His parents used their anger to attempt to control each other as well as their children. Sometimes the anger erupted into violence and Michael and his siblings would get physically hurt. Michael never knew when one of his parents would suddenly become enraged, so the threat was always there.

Michael was the oldest of four children and was often put in charge of taking care of his siblings. He often took out on his siblings his fear and rage at being abused by his parents. While some part of Michael didn’t want to be like his parents, this was all he knew.

As an adult, Michael struggles with his frequent anger at his wife and children. His wife threatened to leave him if he didn’t get some help, which is what led him to consult with me.

“Michael, anger is often used to cover up another, more painful feeling. What do you think you are covering up with your anger?” I asked.

“I don’t know. I just get so frustrated and then out comes the anger.”

“What did you feel as a child, besides scared, when your parents were angry and violent with you?”

“I guess I felt pretty much alone.”

“You must have felt very alone and uncared for and also helpless over what was happening.”

“Yes, I felt so helpless! I hated feeling so alone and helpless. It was so scary. I couldn’t wait to get bigger so I wouldn’t feel so helpless.”

“What triggers that helpless feeling now?”

“Humm…I guess it’s when my wife and kids don’t do what I want them to do or what I think they should do.”

“So rather than feel and accept your helplessness over them, which is the reality but is a difficult feeling to feel, you avoid feeling that old helplessness by trying to control them with your anger, just as your parents did. Is that right?”

“I guess so. I guess I try to control them rather than feel helpless. But why should I feel helpless? It’s an awful feeling.

“Michael, when you were a child, you were helpless over your parents brutality, and you were also helpless over yourself in many ways. You couldn’t just leave and go live with someone else. You couldn’t walk away without further punishment. However, today, while you are still helpless over others, you are not helpless over yourself. You can walk away from a situation that doesn’t feel good, or you can speak up for yourself. You can also explore difficulties with your family. You didn’t have any of these options as a child. But unless you accept your helplessness over others, you will try to control them, and anger is the way you’ve learned to do it. Anger is your automatic controlling, addictive response to protect against feeling that old helplessness. You will continue to be angry until you accept your helplessness over others – over what they choose to do and who they choose to be.”

Helplessness over others is a very hard feeling to accept. For many people, it feels like a life or death feeling, because as infants we were completely helpless and if no one came we would die. Some of us cried and cried and no one came and we felt helpless over living or dying. While today helplessness over others is not usually a life or death experience, the feeling can trigger our infant terror. Most people will do anything to avoid the feeling of helplessness, even though we are no longer helpless over ourselves. Yet until we accept our helplessness over others, we will try to control them, and anger is a major way many people have learned to attempt to control.

It took Michael time to learn how to take care of himself – how to embrace and accept his helpless feelings rather than ignore them or cover them up with anger. As he learned to take loving care of himself and his own feelings and needs, he became more accepting of other’s feelings and needs. As a result of accepting himself and others, and of learning to feel and manage his painful feelings, his need to control others gradually diminished.

In the course of working with me, Michael learned to access a personal source of spiritual guidance to help him not feel so alone and to know how to take loving care of himself. Michael found that when he was connected with his spiritual guidance, he was much less likely to act out in anger. He found he could manage his difficult feelings of aloneness and helplessness far more easily when he felt the love and support of Spirit.

Air Soft Guns – Everything You Need to Know

October 14th, 2008 by Administrator

The sport of air soft has been all the rage the last few years, and its growth shows no signs of slowing any time soon. But don’t let the name of the sport fool you. An air soft gun shoots BBs at speeds that can easily cause serious injury. If you’re looking to learn about air soft, or you’re an experienced player looking for a review, this article covers the basics of the equipment and safety protocol.

The popularity of the sport likely stems from how realistic the guns and scenarios are. Almost all air soft guns are modeled after a real gun model (known as “real steel”), modeling even the reloading mechanism and weight. Players typically wear camouflage and work together as teams to win the game. Like paintball, when someone gets hit they are out of the game, either until a new game starts or until a predetermined amount of time has passed.

Air Soft Guns and Equipment

There are three main types of systems that an air soft gun may use to shoot a BB. Electric powered guns, or AEGs (automatic electric guns), use a battery pack to power the shooting mechanism in the gun. These guns are by far the most popular and, given their typically higher quality, the most expensive of the three types. One advantage of AEGs is that spare batteries are smaller and lighter than spare gas canisters, so carrying backup power in the field is easier.

Gas powered guns operate on a similar system to that of most paintball guns. A gas canister, either attached to the gun via a hose or physically attached to the gun, pressurizes gas that is released to propel the BB out of the barrel of the air soft gun. One neat feature that is becoming more popular with gas-powered guns is call blowback. Right after the gun shoots the BB, a small amount of gas is used to power the reload mechanism. While this uses more gas, it greatly increases the speed at which one can fire in succession.

Spring-loaded guns are perhaps the least popular, simply because they do not feature semi- or fully-automatic capabilities. The spring must be recocked every time after firing, obviously decreasing the rapid succession firing capabilities of a player.

Air Soft Safety

Safety should be the primary concern of anyone using an air soft gun in any situation. Six millimeter BBs traveling at hundreds of feet per second will hurt when they hit you – they can cause more serious damage if they hit unexposed skin or the eyes. Needless to say, ALWAYS wear eye protection (preferably whole face masks) when playing air soft or when you are near air soft guns. Covering unexposed skin, including your hands, neck, and head, will also help reduce the risk of injury.

Even though you “play” air soft, air soft guns are not toys. The same precautions taken with real steel should be followed with air soft guns as well. While this is not a comprehensive list, following the safety guidelines below will help you stay safe.

• First and foremost, always treat the gun as if it were loaded. Given the BBs small size, it is markedly harder to tell if an air soft gun is loaded than it is to determine if a real gun, which uses bigger ammunition, is loaded.
• Use the gun’s safety when you are not actively using it. After removing the safety, you should keep your finger out of the trigger guard until right before you are ready to shoot. This will help minimize “friendly fire” incidents and keep everyone safer.
• Never point the air soft gun at something you’re not going to shoot. This goes for when the gun is loaded or not.
• Never store your air soft gun loaded. Double and triple check to make sure the gun is completely unloaded before storing it, and always store ammunition separate from the gun.

A final note on safety: one disadvantage to the air soft gun’s looking like a real gun is that law enforcement officers and others usually cannot tell the difference between the two. There have been several incidents where an air soft gun was mistaken for a real gun, and terrible things have happened because of the mistake. Only use your air soft gun in controlled environments, and if it is possible that someone may see you and confuse your gun for a real one, the best thing to do is to contact the local law enforcement agency and tell them what you are doing.

Air soft can be fun, exciting, and intense. Given the nature of the sport, it is also dangerous, and no matter how careful you are, injury may be sustained. However, following the guidelines outlined in user manuals and this article, the likelihood of your getting hurt can be greatly reduced.

A Guide to Batting Cages

October 13th, 2008 by Administrator

Batting cages are enclosed or partially enclosed pieces of sporting equipment that act as a “catcher,” in effect, for batters practicing hitting baseballs or softballs. Batting cages help to keep balls in a contained space so that the batter can continue hitting without having to continually retrieve them. Different types of batting cages can be located outdoors or in a gym or activity center.

Batting cages are both in professional, school-sponsored, and recreational baseball and softball. They can be used to help improve a batter’s speed or to improve his or her accuracy in hitting a ball. A batter’s agility and stance, as well as his overall performance, can be enhanced by using a batting cage. While aiding a batter in improving his or her skill, batting cages also keep the ball in an enclosed area to prevent the injury of bystanders and onlookers.

Batting cages consist of a configuration of netting over a frame. They can differ in material, size, and cost, as well as structure and workmanship. Whether batting cages are used indoors or outdoors can be a deciding factor in what the best choice of material should be. Cages that are used outside will need to be tougher than those used indoors.

The netting in batting cages can be constructed of various materials and degrees of sturdiness. Framing in a batting cage should be constructed with a pipe that will withstand temperatures and weather in the area in which it is used. For that reason, a batting cage used by the Boston Red Sox will probably be made differently than one used by the Los Angeles Angels.

With less time spent retrieving baseballs, batters can spend more time advancing their technique. For decades, batting cages have played a central role in improving the swings of professional and amateur batters.
