I’ve been running for 27 years, and one of the best things I learned early in my running career was…

So, let’s say you’re just getting started in running.

One of the things you like best about the habit is that being a runner doesn’t take lots of specialized equipment. I mean, you just lace up a pair of shoes and go!

And that’s true! Running is one of the cheapest forms of aerobic exercise there is. You’ve probably already got everything you need! It’s beautiful!

Everything, that is, except shoes, perhaps.

You see, one of the biggest mistakes a beginning runner makes is to think: “Hey, I’ll just grab my high school basketball shoes and head out for a run!”

Wrong! That’s one of the fastest and surest ways to join the ranks of wounded runners!

Shoes are THE most important piece of equipment for a runner…

… Whether you are a complete running newbie, or you’re an elite athlete who wins cars for your racing efforts…

If you don’t have high quality running shoes, you are on your way to the foot doctor, the knee doctor, or the hip doctor!

Quality shoes are easy to find.

Go to your local running store, and have one of the sales staff (who is an experienced runner) watch you walk. They’ll figure out what kind of shoe you need. Let them give you suggestions.

Then, try them on, and run around the parking lot.

That’s right. If a running store won’t let you try the shoes out with a short jaunt through the parking lot, DON’T BUY FROM THEM! Any reputable running store will let you try out their shoes.

1) Rotate 2 pairs of shoes.

Yeah, it might sound like a ploy of the shoe companies to make more money, but it’s not!

The midsole of your shoe (the “cushiony” part you can’t see, under your insole) is the most important part for your foot. It keeps you from getting injured.

Every time your foot strikes the ground, you are landing with the force of approximately 500 pounds of pressure per square inch! That’s a lot of pounding!

The midsole of your running shoe takes all that wear and tear, and has to keep giving you a cushioned ride for a long time.

Here’s the problem: If you run in your shoes every day, the midsole doesn’t have a chance to spring back all the way by the next time you run again.

That means you’re not getting the protection you should from the shoe, and you’re “cruisin’ for a bruisin’” in the injury department.

So, the best thing to do is have at least 2 pair of shoes to run in (many runners have even more). This allows the shoe to recover between your runs.

Plus, you get the added benefit of EACH pair of shoes lasting longer. If you give them a rest and let the midsole spring all the way back, they actually give you more running miles.

One more little tip: Use the oldest pair in your rotation for your short, easy runs; and use your newest pair for longer runs.

2) Change shoes every 300-450 miles.

As crazy as it sounds, most seasoned runners keep a cumulative tally of the miles they’ve run in each shoe. You can take a look at my running journal, and every day, right there at the end, it’s listed… what shoes I wore, and how many miles they have on ‘em.

How often you retire a pair of shoes depends on 3 considerations: Your size, your footstrike, and your surface.

Size: It makes sense that lighter runners can wear shoes longer, in general. And vice versa… If you’re a bit heavier, you will wear down your midsole a bit faster. (But that’s why you’re running, right — so you won’t be “heavier!”)

Footstrike: If you are a neutral runner, which means you land on your foot in a “normal” manner, then your shoes will last longer. But if you pronate (land on the outside of your foot) or supinate (land on the inside), you’ll wear your shoes faster.

Surface: If you always run on hard surfaces (concrete, asphalt) then you need to get new shoes more often. Run in grass, on the track, on trails, and your shoes will last longer.

And you know what? There’s a certain satisfaction in retiring a pair of shoes… It’s like you’re saying, “I did it. I ran a LOT of miles. So many that my shoes are done for. I’m a real runner.”

And the last bit of advice with your shoes…

3) Don’t wear them for ANYTHING except running!

The very fastest way to use up your shoes is to wear them as everyday shoes! No lie!

Think about it. You go running for 30-50 minutes a day. And while you’re running, you have BOTH feet off the ground almost the whole time!

But when you’re walking around during the day, doing your business…

… Or you’re going to Wal-Mart in the evening…

You’re standing on your shoes almost the whole time!

Trust me. This is the worst thing for a pair of running shoes.

So, let’s review.

Rotate at least 2 pair of shoes.

Change shoes every 300-500 miles.

Wear your running shoes ONLY for running!

Voila… You’re much less likely to be a gimpy, injured runner!

The Belief That NFL Football Players – Can Do Anything

Now, I remember when I was like 5 years old and someone flipped me off in front of my house. I had no idea what that meant, I just assumed that it was another way to wave. I went in my house to show my mom my new wave and I was cracked upside the skull with a wooden spoon. I realized that the middle finger was a bad thing and didn’t flip anyone off again, in front of her anyway. As I grew older, WWF Wrestling was becoming bigger and bigger; Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Ultimate Warrior, the list goes on and on. I saw someone get hit with a chair one time and it looked like it hurt but he got right back up. So I said, “Let’s give this a try.” One of my friends hit me with a chair and holy crap it hurt like hell. The scary part is I got the weakest kid I knew to hit me with the chair. I could only imagine how much pain I would have been in if my strong friends would have helped out.

As I grew older, I realized that I would not imitate everything I saw on TV. We aren’t talking about watching cartoons and saying if Wiley E. Coyote falls off a cliff and springs back up I can do it too. I knew those cartoons weren’t real and knew I wasn’t an idiot. I’m talking about watching movies and watching guys race bikes and do stunts and race cars at like 150 miles an hour and then when the cops come; they are so slick the cops have no chance to catch them. Now going back up to a few sentences ago, I specified I wasn’t an idiot. I know if I tried any of those stunts or tricks they do, I would either kill myself or end up in jail.

So why in god’s green earth do some of these NFL athletes think they can? If you are a pro football player does that mean you are above the law and can cheat death? Those are super hero abilities if I remember correctly. Or is it that you can do no wrong cause you aren’t the “average” Joe? I have no idea cause I am not a pro athlete. Who knows what is going through these guy’s skulls. Well, we have a few examples of what happens when NFL players watch movies and try the stunts:

Movie: Torque, cycle stunt videos, etc…

Just in case you wanted to know about the movie Torque, it is about motorcycle racing basically and tons and tons of special effects are used in it. I have driven motorcycles and they are blast. Using the minimal amount of experience on the bike, I was still able to figure out that most of the movie had some realistic stunts. They were fun to watch but even the ones that weren’t “enhanced” by a computer I knew I had no chance in hell of even coming close to doing them. Again, I am not an idiot. So with that being said by an “average” Joe, why would someone as talented and rich and athletic as Winslow believe he can? Am I calling him an idiot? Not at all. All I am wondering is why does he think he can do it? He was in a parking lot trying to do tricks and ends up crashing his bike and hurts his knee and is out for the year. Why would you even try those stunts? It just doesn’t make any sense. You are making millions of dollars for one reason and that is playing football so why would you do something that would jeopardize your career? Leave the stunts to the professional stunt men.

Now when it comes to car racing, not only are there movies out there to watch, there are also video games to play. They are all based on the same concept basically; race cars to make money and stay away from the police. Have I street raced before? No. Have I driven a car really fast before? But of course, who hasn’t. What I’m trying to get at here is there is a difference between driving your car real fast and street racing. Both are dangerous but there is a bit more danger in street racing. Have I played those video games mentioned above? Yes I have and I’ll even admit that I own one of them. I have a blast playing them and yeah I have a kick ass car that can do speeds of over 200mph. Again, I know I am not an idiot. I understand that video games and real life don’t compare. I know what I can do in video games I can’t do in real life. But not to Quintin Williams of course because he is a football player. He was caught street racing last week around Dolphin Stadium at speeds topping 110mph. Again, am I calling him an idiot? No, but I will call him an idiot cause he was drunk while he was street racing. I’ll admit that I’ve driven my tricked out Porsche drunk off my ass but then again I was in the comfort of my own home playing video games. Williams was doing something that could of have cost him his life or the life of another person because he was street racing and he was drunk. He was a professional football player making millions but not anymore cause a day after his arrest, the Dolphins released him.

The belief that NFL football players have that they can do anything happens all the time. If just doesn’t relate to movies and video games though. It goes way beyond that with drugs and assault and jail time and much more. Sometimes it gets a little carried away and nowadays we are seeing more and more sports figures in the news for negative acts off the field than good plays on the field. Both these stories of Winslow and Williams have bad endings that prove it doesn’t matter if you are an “average” Joe or a stud football player in the NFL, what you see on TV isn’t always for you. There is a reason shows put a “Do Not Try This At Home” stamp at the beginning of their shows. It shouldn’t matter who you are or what you do, stick with what you are good at and don’t be an idiot!

The Role of Zen in Martial Arts

It’s said that the roots of many of the Martial Arts is in India, with Buddhist monks. While many sources give conflicting data, it’s known that in Japan, the only places that were large enough to allow for indoor training during inclement weather, were the huge Buddhist temples. In fact, much of what is done in Martial Arts schools with a Japanese background comes from, and can be traced back to this connection.

For example, white uniforms were the attire of Japanese Buddhist monks and lay-people alike. The kyu and dan “class” and “level” grade rankings were originally developed for and used as markers for how much a monk had learned and progressed through his training. And, much of the etiquette within dojos “training halls”) is identical to those used in these same temples to show respect to all that has gone before me and to all that I aspire to become. In fact, the Japanese kanji characters used to write the word ‘dojo’ actually refer to “a place where enlightenment takes place.”

Now, before you run out and scream about quitting for fear of being converted to Buddhism, Hinduism, or some other ‘foreign’, sacrilegious cult – don’t panic. Buddhism, while often practiced like many conventional Western religions, is not really a religion at all – at least not the way most people define or practice a so-called ‘religion’.

As developed by the founder Siddhartha Gautoma, refered to as the Buddha (“one who is awake”), and fine-tuned over the past two and a half – plus centuries, Buddhism is a philosophy of personal development whereby the practitioner works to understand his or her true nature and the immutable laws of the universe that govern the world and everything in it. It is not at all a belief system as are many religions today, but instead relies on the student coming to an intimate understanding of reality and truth through direct, personal experience.

One of the monks credited with developing martial Arts in the Buddhist temples of the time was known as Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen. This new training was readily adopted by the monks for many reasons. And while the monks may have been interested in defending themselves from unfriendly outsiders, it is also likely that they also wished to prepare themselves for the demands of their daily lives – lives which required that they sat unmoving for hours while in deep meditative practice. The Martial arts they practiced were a great means of physical exercise while still being based heavily on their philosophical beliefs of peace through “understanding conflict.”

Zen, the most popular form of Buddhist thought known today, is directly related to the cross-cultural interchange between Martial Arts and the many philosophical systems that came together as these teachings travelled from India, across the Himalayas, through China and into Japan. Ironically, many Westerners have no idea that Zen is a form of Buddhist study and practice, nor is it usually seen as much more than “seated meditation” to most martial artists – both teachers and students.

Japanese Zen Master Taisen Deshimaru often wrote about Zen and the principles of Bushido, or “the way of the warrior,” which grew, in part, out of Buddhist thought.

Gi: Having the right decision, right attitude, the truth

Yu: Bravery tinged with heroism

Jin: Universal love; compassion

Rei: Right action; courtesy

Makoto: Utter sincerity; truthfulness

Meiyo: Honor; high ethical character

Chugo: Devotion; loyalty

were the common ground between the monk and the warrior. In fact, there is no difference between the two.

Deshimaru emphasized that the learning and practice of these principles is a lifelong process, and needs to take place “…in the body, through the unconscious.” The ancient tradition of the Martial Arts is an internal process, a gradual connection with one’s own deep-seated intuition. Deshimaru explains: “In the spirit of Zen . . .everyday life becomes a contest. There must be an awareness at every moment: getting up in the morning, working, eating, going to bed. That is the place for the mastery of self.”

I don’t often mention green maintenance in my golf lessons. Nor do I often discuss it in my golf tips. That’s because golfers want to talk about hitting the ball instead. But the care and feeding of a club’s greenshow they are mowed, watered, fertilized can have a major impact on a player’s golf handicap, especially if he or she plays the same course a lot.

Speed is the key factor when considering green maintenance. Usually, players want a superintendent to increase green speed. It’s probably the most frequent request about greens. Occasionally, players want a superintendent to decrease green speed, but these requests are few and far between. Misjudging the speed of a putt can add strokes to a score, as I’ve mentioned in my golf tips.

The term “green speed” is technically inaccurate. The device measuring “speed” the USGA Stimpmeter gauges the distance a ball rolls when released at a controlled speed on a putting surface, not the ball’s velocity. To talk about green speed then is a bit of a misnomer. Nevertheless, we continue to use the term when talking about greens. (I even use it when giving golf lessons.) A green with a relatively long ball roll is considered “fast.” A green with a relatively short ball roll is said to be “slow.”

Ball roll relates to relationship between the initial energy when a putter strikes the ball and the resistance between the ball and the turf’s surface, or friction. As the ball rolls across the green, its surface slows it down thanks to friction. A green with high resistance slows a ball down more than a green with low resistance. Moderating friction changes a green’s speed.

Environmental factors, such as humidity, can moderate friction and change a green’s speed. For example, high humidity increases green speed, a consideration when playing on a hot day. Soil type also influences green speed. Greens made predominately of clay are faster in spring than their sandier counterparts. While superintendents have little or no control over these factors, they have minimal impact on your game.

Management practices, on the other hand, like mowing or irrigation, can make a profound impact on a green, both short-term and long-term. Below is a summary of how some popular management practices affect green speed.

An effective way of increasing ball roll in the short-term, mowing has a significant impact on green speed. Decreasing mowing height by only 1/16 inch can increase ball roll from 6 to 10 inches. A similar response occurs when you “double cut” a green (mowing it a second time, perpendicular to the first cut) which can increase ball roll 6 to 12 inches. Mower type also influences green speed. Greens cut with a walk-behind mower are generally 6 to 8 inches fast than greens cut with triplex mowers.

Irrigation

Dry greens are faster than moist or wet greens. Withholding irrigation or decreasing it before an event requiring faster greens will increase ball roll 4 to 8 inches, depending on soil type.

Rolling

Rolling golf greens isn’t new, but it’s growing in popularity thanks to new research and better equipment. Depending on the type of roller you use, you can increase green speed from 4 to 10 inches, with minimal compaction problems on sand-based greens

Topdressing

Light frequent topdressing with or without vertical mowing or core aerating is common. Topdressing decreases speed for up to 1 week after application, followed by an increase of from 4 to 8 inches (above the speed before topdressing.) Vertical mowing has a similar effect. Core aeration reduces speed initially, and if you don’t topdress to fill in the holes, decrease it long term.

Fertility

Decreasing nitrogen fertility will gradually increase ball-roll distance. A decrease in nitrogen fertility of only 10 percent can increase ball roll 8 to 12 percent. The effects may take up to a year to see, however, depending on previous fertility practices. Plant growth regulators can increase ball roll from 4 to 8 inches, depending on product, rate, and frequency of application.

Keep in mind that these factors do not operate independently. Modifying one may require compensation by modifying another.

Next time you play your favorite course be aware of these factors and how they affect a green. Take them into account when putting. Doing so might just help you improve your round and your golf handicap.

Driving is For Show, Putting is For Dough – Become a Better Putter

There’s an old saying that goes something like this “Driving is for show and putting is for dough”. When it comes to golf this statement is dead on. It’s clear with the way the game of golf goes even if you have the ability to drive a golf ball 250 yards or more with a single swing of your driver, it does you know good if you need 5 strokes with your putter to sink the ball. Unfortunately there is no such thing as perfect putting but with the tips provided below you can significantly improve your golf game and who knows, you could end up wearing the fabled green jacket.

The two most basic elements of solid putting revolve around your grip and you stance. The first thing you should do is lightly place your hands around your putter. Remember this isn’t a weight that you’re lifting to gain muscles so treat the club gently. In case you’re wondering how light of a grip, focus on using 60 – 70% of your normal grip strength with your pinky finger actually sitting on the club, as opposed to overlapping it or interlocking it when utilizing a regular grip. Always make sure to avoid holding the club at an angle and squarely address the gold ball while in a relaxed state both physically and mentally.

While in your state of focused relaxation make sure to address the golf ball correctly by having the ball towards the front of your stance and centered directly between your shoulders. Now keeping your hands lightly gripped near the top of the putter while simultaneously focusing your eyes directly on the golf ball underneath you start to develop in your mind’s eye the path you want your golf ball to take after your putter makes contact. Visualize the golf ball going into the hole. This simple technique will allow your swing to follow a natural pendulum stroke along the putting target line.

During this whole process your feet should generally be set inside of your hips with your weight evenly balanced toward the inside of you respective heels. Remember the golf ball is directly centered in between your stance. Improper addressing of the golf ball will eliminate an error free swing along the projected putter glide path and will hamper any ability for a proper follow through.

Now that you’ve successfully achieved the proper grip needed to putt with and have a solid stance evenly centered over the golf ball you’re ready to putt. The key here is to firmly tap the golf ball with the center of your putter; this is commonly referred to as the sweet spot. Concentrate on a smooth stroke following through with a forward motion and the net result should be a nice putt into the hole or as close as possible.

Speaking of golf balls, one bit of advice is to always use the same golf balls. The reality is not all golf balls are created equal. A properly built ball will be evenly balanced with solid core materials and a cover that is of equal thickness all the way around the golf ball. As soon as you determine the golf ball that best fits your style of golfing always make sure to continue to use that same brand of ball.

Perhaps the single biggest factor to dramatically increasing your putting proficiency is through practice and I mean plenty of it. Practice putting doesn’t just revolve around putting the golf ball down on the green and hitting it. Instead you need to practice putting from different angles and from different distances from the cup. For example start putting from 1 foot, then as you master it go to 2 feet, then 3 feet, then 5 feet, then 7 feet…. etc. Don’t get alarmed if you don’t sink the ball every time instead focus on consistently placing the golf ball as close to the cup as possible.

By following the simple tips outlined in this article you will soon be able to significantly lower your golf score as a direct result of your new and improved putting proficiency.
